EMGs

Electromyography (EMG) is the clinical study of the electrical activity of muscle fibers individually and collectively. This electrical activity can be recorded via surface or needle electrodes, the latter being used far more commonly in the clinical setting, and is evaluated during needle insertion, during periods of rest (spontaneous activity), and during periods of voluntary muscle contraction.

EMG results can reveal problems with nerve dysfunction, muscle dysfunction, or problems with muscle to nerve signal transmission. When is the test routinely ordered? When you have any of the following symptoms;

  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle cramping or pain

The results from an EMG are often used to diagnose or rule out multiple conditions such as;

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Muscle disorders such as muscular dystrophy or polymyositis
  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Disorders that affect the nerve root, such as herniated disc
